FASD Support

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a diagnosis term used to characterize the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the brain and body. FASD is a life-long disability. Individuals with FASD will have certain obstacles in their everyday lives and require assistance with motor skills, physical health, learning, memory, attention, communication, emotional regulation, and social skills in order to realize their full potential. Each person with FASD is unique, with areas of strength and struggle.

Alcohol-induced brain injury frequently leaves no evident physical indications. The impact of brain injury can be observed in behaviour and learning issues. This is why FASD is sometimes referred to as a hidden disability, and what distinguishes it from many other impairments.

A multidisciplinary team of professionals, including pediatricians, occupational therapists, and psychologists, collaborates on the diagnosis. When determining a diagnosis, members of the team consider the following:

  • Prenatal exposure to alcohol
  • Facial features
  • Brain development and functioning
